Grain 0.8.0-rc3

Original release notes

GRAIN v0.8.0-rc3

Bringing the client to life - a real signer, a settings overhaul, and grain's own look Release candidate 9.17.2026 Full Changelog: https://github.com/0ceanSlim/grain/compare/v0.8.0-rc2...v0.8.0-rc3

---

rc2 hardened the relay - durability, retention, and NIP-66 discovery under the hood. rc3 is the layer you actually touch: a real login flow powered by mill, a settings page reorganized into tabs, the NIP-66 monitors surfaced where you can see and refresh them, an owner-only moderation shortcut, and grain's own palette as the default look. If you're running the dev relay, this is the candidate to click around in.

---

A real login - the mill signer (1.8.1)

Signing in is now handled by grain's own mill web component, wired to the relay's identity so the modal wears your relay's branding.

  • Branded, laid out as a grid. The modal picks up the relay's name and icon from NIP-11, opens with an "I'm new here" path up top, and lays the sign-in options out as tiles.
  • Platform-aware methods. Desktop leads with pomegranate (Google-backed FROST signing) and a browser extension (NIP-07); Android offers pomegranate + Amber (NIP-55); iOS offers pomegranate + private key. Everything else - remote bunker (NIP-46), private key, read-only - lives in an advanced menu so the front door stays uncluttered.
  • Terms & privacy links render in the modal footer when the relay advertises them in NIP-11.
  • The session layer learns two new signing methods (google, pomegranate) so grain can carry those identities like any other.

---

Settings, reorganized into tabs

The settings page was one long scroll; it's now five tabs, with your session mode and signing method kept as a header strip.

  • My Relays Discovery Media Security Account. Each area stands on its own, and My Relays is further split into Mailboxes (NIP-65 outbox/inbox + NIP-17 DM), Lists (search, favorites, blocked, private), and App (plumbing + the fixed-relay override).
  • Deep links (the header's "Manage relays", the upload flow's "add a server") now open straight to the right tab.

---

Monitors, surfaced (NIP-66)

rc2 taught grain to discover relays from NIP-66 monitors; rc3 puts that in front of you.

  • A live monitor-consensus strip on the Discovery tab - how many monitors grain trusts, how many relays they've reported, and how many are browsable - refreshing on the same interval as the pool overview.
  • A "Refresh discovery" button that runs a discovery pass on demand (new session-gated POST /api/v1/client/discover) so newly found relays surface without waiting on the periodic roll. The client status endpoint now also reports pool_monitors and pool_discovered.
  • The settings "Known" count now reflects the browsable set, matching the header instead of the much larger routing-directory union.

---

One-click moderation for the relay owner

  • Viewing any author's profile while signed in as the relay owner now shows a Ban button that adds that pubkey to the relay blacklist via NIP-86 banpubkey. It's owner-only (resolved against the relay's NIP-11 owner) and never appears on your own account.

---

grain's own look

  • Grain is the default theme. First-time visitors land on grain's palette - warm dark "wheat-field" surfaces with a green accent - instead of the old violet. Anyone who's picked a theme keeps their choice.
  • "Dark" is now a true neutral dark. The Dark theme was really a purple theme; it's been reworked into near-black graphite surfaces, neutral text, and a muted slate accent. Midnight remains the purple option; Matrix the neon-green one.
  • PWA chrome matches. The installed-app/address-bar color follows the grain palette rather than the old purple.

---

Snappier event view

  • Opening a single event no longer waits out the full query window - the lookup returns as soon as the event id is found instead of blocking on the limit, so event pages load noticeably faster.

---

Housekeeping

  • Recommended media servers and dev-relay references now point at oslim.dev (happytavern is being deprecated).
  • The roadmap was re-planned: v0.8 scope closed out, v0.9 split into 0.9.0 / 0.9.1 / 0.9.2, and v1.0 refilled.

---

Upgrading from rc2

  • No config migration required. rc3 is client/frontend work on top of rc2's relay hardening - the durability, retention, and NIP-66 fixes from rc2 all carry forward unchanged.
  • Still a release candidate - please file anything you hit before the final v0.8.0.
